Detroit's Annual Cinco de Mayo Parade Celebrates Latin American Cultures

The 59th annual Cinco de Mayo parade was held in Detroit, Michigan, on Sunday, May 5.

Video filmed by Brendan Gutenschwager shows the colorful parade making its way down Vernor Hwy on Sunday.

The parade was organized by Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metropolitan Detroit, which said the theme was “La Historia de Southwest Detroit,” or “The History of Southwest Detroit.”

“This theme embraces all the beautiful cultures from the many Latin American countries that create the rich fabric of our community,” the committee said.

Cinco de Mayo originated as a commemoration of Mexico’s 1862 victory against French forces at the Battle of Puebla and has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and Mexican-Americans in the United States. Credit: Brendan Gutenschwager via Storyful
