New diabetes reference group set to reshape care in Cornwall

A new diabetes clinical reference group (CRG) has been set up in Cornwall to reshape the way care is provided.

It brings together a wide array of professionals from the medical, public health, and voluntary sectors who deliver care and services to those with the illness.

The local integrated care board seeks to augment its cause by recruiting more individuals with experience in type 1, type 2, or gestational (during pregnancy) diabetes.

These people would provide invaluable feedback and contribute ideas for future care provision.

Registration to join a lived experience expert reference group is open until May 31 through an online form.

Dr Chris Reid, chief medical officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board said: "We know that people with diabetes are experts in their condition and we want to hear their feedback about how we can improve our services.

"Ultimately we want to support people to manage their diabetes more effectively.

"So we would love to hear from people who can help us by joining our expert reference group."

Involvement in the group can take several forms, from participating in surveys and group discussions to shaping services alongside staff and clinicians.

Registrants will have the chance to attend one of two meetings on June 5 at either 11am or 6pm.

These events will offer additional information and can be attended in-person or online.

Amanda Veall, CRG lead said: "It’s important that anyone with diabetes can have a say in their care which is why we are forming this group to provide feedback and shape future services.

"No matter what type of diabetes you have or whether you can only support us online or in person we want to hear from you.

"We’re also interested in people who have a family history of diabetes or who want to understand more about diabetes services."

Several initiatives are currently running in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, such as a unique 'super clinic' that provides nine separate medical checks within 30 minutes, and the successful Diabetes and You programme delivered by Kernow Health.

The latter offers critical support and guidance to people new to type 2 diabetes, as well as those living with the condition.

Over, 1,000 people at risk of diabetes joined the diabetes prevention programme in 2023/24.

In the last year, in-person courses have been launched across 44 venues in Cornwall, complemented by a digital course.
