Rian Johnson has revealed that Disney said yes to his new Star Wars trilogy without even knowing the story - and without there even really being one.

The writer is on directing duties for The Last Jedi which drops in UK cinemas today (December 14), although he will pass the reigns of Episode IX over to Force Awakens director JJ Abrams (who replaces the ousted Colin Trevorrow).

Rian will also be responsible for writing and directing a fourth Star Wars trilogy, which was officially announced last month.

But, far from having a plan, he was granted the trilogy without even knowing what it would be about.

"[The fourth trilogy] came about because we were getting to the end of making this and again, I knew I wasn't doing the next one," he told SlashFilm.

"And I had had a really good time not just making this movie, but working with [producer] Kathy [Kennedy] and also working with Disney, working with Bob Iger, Alan Horn, and Alan Berg. And we just had just a really good experience.

"And we were all... it was like last week of senior year. We were cleaning out our lockers. And all getting kind of sad. And saying, how do we keep working together?

"And that I threw out, I said, the most interesting thing to me would be a new trilogy, one story told over three movies.

"Go new places, meet new folks, come up with a new story to tell in the Star Wars universe. The sky's the limit. That sounds thrilling. And they really responded to that. So we're off, yeah."

The fourth trilogy of Star Wars will take viewers beyond 2019's Episode IX.

Although none of the films have release dates quite yet, we do know they will branch off from the familiar faces of the franchise and instead follow "new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored".

"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi," Rian Johnson and his producer Ram Bergman said.

"Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can't wait to continue with this new series of films."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in cinemas TODAY (December 14) in the UK, and December 15 in the US.
