UPDATE District attorney: No criminal charges warranted in shootings that killed two people

Jan. 9—SUNBURY — No charges will be filed after two separate shootings resulted in the deaths of two people Sunday evening in Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County.

Northumberland County District Attorney Michael O'Donnell said an investigation into the tragedy determined that one of the shootings was an act of self-defense by a juvenile during a violent domestic dispute inside the home.

What began as a homicide investigation revealed that one of the shooting victims, Tracey Adams, 47, of Dalmatia, shot and killed Brandi Hauck, 31, of Dalmatia, while standing outside Hauck's residence along Malta Road, O'Donnell said.

After Adams shot Hauck, he forcibly entered Hauck's home with the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury to the other individuals inside the home, O'Donnell explained.

At that point, a juvenile inside the home acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Adams, the district attorney said Tuesday.

"The juvenile's actions were justifiable and prevented death or serious bodily injury to the remaining individuals inside the home," O'Donnell said. "The Northumberland County District Attorney's Office extends our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragic event."

O'Donnell thanked the state police for what he said was the troopers' "swift response and professionalism in conducting the investigation."

"The investigation remains ongoing and the district attorney's office will continue to collaborate with the state police to ensure a complete investigation into this event," O'Donnell said.

State police say they began the investigation when they received a phone call for an active double homicide on Sunday.

When troopers arrived they spoke to individuals at the scene who said a verbal and physical altercation began between a female and Adams.

When the female fled the situation, Adams drove to the home on Malta Road and encountered Hauck who troopers said demanded Adams leave.

Troopers said Adams was brandishing a pistol and then shot through the front door of the residence and killed Hauck, troopers said.

Troopers said Adams said he was going to kill everyone in the residence after forcing his way into the home.

A juvenile male then shielded a juvenile female and another female before firing a weapon and killing Adams, troopers said.

Northumberland County Coroner Jim Kelley said Hauck died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the head, while Adams received multiple gunshot wounds, the fatal injury being to his head.

Kelley said Hauck is the stepdaughter of Adams.
