Doctor Who has confirmed a classic story, The Daleks, will be updated as part of the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

The iconic sci-fi show is due to return later this month for a trilogy of specials, with the BBC celebrating the anniversary by also announcing The Whoniverse, which sees all the classic episodes available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

The latest announcement pertains to a collection of episodes across 1963 and 1964, which saw William Hartnell’s Time Lord lead the TARDIS crew into the Metal City, where they encountered the show’s most famous foe.

The original serial, which consisted of seven 25-minute episodes, has now been edited into one 75-minute special, with the visual style being given a “cosmic” makeover in addition to a brand-new musical score.

The updated version of The Daleks will be available to watch on BBC Four and stream on BBC iPlayer from November 23, with the serial also being available in its original form as part of The Whoniverse.

“It’s been my absolute pleasure to spend the past 12 months working with such a talented team to breathe new life into this classic adventure,” said executive producer Phil Collinson.

“[It’s] a story that is literally the foundation stone of all that Doctor Who has become. The original is a masterpiece of 1960’s television drama and this new version stands on the shoulders of the pioneering spirit of 1960’s Doctor Who.”

It’s been a busy period for the BBC during the announcement of The Whoniverse, with a spin-off show, Tales of the TARDIS, being announced. The six-part series “reunites beloved classic Doctor Who duos, as they board a very special TARDIS on a nostalgic voyage through space and time.”

Former Doctors Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy will all appear, whilst Janet Fielding, Nicola Bryant and Sophie Aldred will all reprise their roles as the Time Lord’s companions.

Doctor Who returns for three 60th anniversary specials later in 2023. The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.
