Weight loss treatments have gained popularity in recent months and with the Mounjaro weight loss jab now available, patients now have even more options for weight loss treatment. With so many weight loss services available it can be confusing for patients to decide which is best for them, especially as many people don’t know the side effects of sudden or extreme weight loss and how it can affect their body.

When beginning your weight loss journey, it's important to use a trusted, expert clinical service that can guide you through the treatments, answer any questions you may have and minimise the side effects. Dr Babak Ashrafi, a GP at Superdrug Online Doctor, shares how sudden weight loss can affect your hair and skin and the best course of action to take.

Hair loss

Dr Ashrafi said: “Rapid weight loss can trigger hair shedding and thinning. This occurs due to the body’s response to stress, which can disrupt the hair growth cycle. As a result, individuals may experience noticeable thinning of the hair and a reduction in hair density. This effect is often temporary and reversible with proper nutrition, consuming protein, vitamins and minerals to keep your hair healthy.”

Dry skin

Dr Ashrafi said: “Significant weight loss can lead to decreased skin hydration and moisture levels, resulting in dryness. This might be attributed to changes in hormone levels and a decrease in the body’s natural oil production. Maintaining skin hydration through adequate water intake and using moisturising skin products can help alleviate this effect.”

Acne and breakouts

Dr Ashrafi said: “Fluctuations in hormone levels during rapid weight loss can disrupt the balance of oil production in the skin, increasing the risk of acne and breakouts. Increased levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol, can stimulate your glands to produce more oil and clog your pores. Proper skincare routines and dietary adjustments can help mitigate acne flare-ups and maintain clear skin.”

When you should seek help

Dr Ashrafi said: “Seek help if you experience excessive hair loss, persistent skin issues or unexplained symptoms like fatigue or mood changes. Superdrug weight loss services and Superdrug Online Doctor can support and provide personalised guidance and support to address underlying concerns and ensure a safe and successful weight loss journey.

"When undertaking a weight loss treatment, your Superdrug GP will always prescribe you a starter dose best suited to your healthcare needs. To keep side effects to a minimum, this is then adjusted over the course of your treatment depending on your requirements as you progress through your weight loss journey.”
