Karen Gillan has tipped Helen Mirren as Peter Capaldi’s replacement in the new series of Doctor Who.

The former ‘companion’, who starred as Amy Pond opposite Matt Smith in the show, has said that she’d been keen to see an actress take over the iconic role.

“I really would like to see Helen in the role actually, because so many people have questioned whether a woman can play the role. Of course an actress can play the role,” she said during an interview on Tuesday’s This Morning.

Despite the fact that many fans have called for a female doctor, it seems that Kris Marshall is still the favourite for the part.

Speaking about the rumoured decision to cast another man, Gillan said: “It's OK, maybe next time.

“I trust the BBC and their choices and they haven't failed us yet with the Doctor.”

She added: “But it would be cool to see a woman in the role one day because a woman could absolutely play that role.”

The 29-year-old Scottish actress stars in the latest instalment of sci-fi blockbuster franchise Guardians of the Galaxy.

Taking about going bald for the role, she said: “I'm so happy to have my hair back. People were calling me ‘sir’ way too often, like for real.

She added: “I have a stunt double who is much better than me at doing stunts. I do a version of stunts, but I look like spaghetti trying to fight people.”
