With series 11 done and dusted, Doctor Who is now amping up work on series 12.

We already know Jodie Whittaker will be back as the Time Lord, though it has been confirmed that the show's next series will not air until 2020.

Still, alongside additional returns from companions Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill, it has now emerged that one of series 11's writers will be back for the next batch of episodes too.

Ed Hime, who penned the penultimate episode 'It Takes You Away', is listed for an episode on series 12 on his United Agents page.

If you remember, that was the episode with the bizarre CGI frog – though we reckoned overall that the episode was "brilliant and baffling", so that may be a good sign for series 12.

Less can be said of the season 11 series finale, which left viewers pretty disappointed, especially as it brought back a rather unpopular villain.

Nevertheless, fans have a lot to look forward to in the New Year's Day special, especially as the show has teased the return of the Daleks.

Speaking of her return for the next series of the show, Whittaker said: "I really can’t wait to step back in and get to work again. It's such an incredible role. It's been an extraordinary journey so far and I'm not quite ready to hand it over yet."

The Doctor Who New Year's special airs January 1 at 7pm on BBC One.
