Doctor Who spoilers follow.

Doctor Who star Ruth Madeley has dropped a hint about new character Shirley Anne Bingham.

Ruth has reunited with Years and Years creator Russell T Davies for the upcoming 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, where she'll play Shirley Anne Bingham in one episode. Or perhaps more than one episode!

The actress may have dropped a hint about a recurring role in the three special episodes during an appearance on The One Show this week, where she was asked about the role.

"You're gonna love Shirley, you're gonna love the episodes, or episode, who knows," she teased. "All I will say is, whatever questions you have, my answer will be, 'guess'."

Ruth joked that even discussing the Doctor Who anniversary "terrifies" her because of the intense secrecy surrounding the episodes.

Three specials will air later this year, featuring David Tennant and Catherine Tate reuniting to stop a nefarious plot from Neil Patrick Harris's mysterious villain.

The three episodes will be titled 'The Star Beast', 'Wild Blue Yonder' and 'The Giggle' — and will feature appearances from classic monster Beep the Meep and his archenemies, the Wrarth Warriors.

Other guest stars lined up for the anniversary series are Jacqueline King and Karl Collins, returning as Donna's mum and husband Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, plus the late Bernard Cribbins, appearing as Donna's grandfather Wilfred Mott. Heartstopper's Yasmin Finney will be playing a mysterious character called Rose.

These three episodes will be followed by the debut of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, alongside Millie Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
