Doctor Who's season 14 finale will be released in cinemas, giving fans the chance to enjoy the double feature on the big screen rather than watch it at home.

The BBC show will end its new series —which has been rebranded as season one— with two episodes titled The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death. The episodes will bring Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson's first full outing as the Fifteenth Doctor and his companion, Ruby Sunday.

Showrunner Russell T Davies has often spoken about the final, calling it "the most devastating finale" the show has had, which is strong words for a series that gave us The End of Time, The Doctor Falls and more.

Speaking at a press event for the current series, Davies said of the two-part finale: "Literally, the biggest finale ever. There’s some shots of that in the trailers coming up. Oh my god, you’re gonna die." Rather than face that at home, why not do it alongside other die-hard fans?

The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death will be screened in select cinemas across the UK on Friday, 21 June — in line with the second episode's premiere on BBC iPlayer. The Legend of Ruby Sunday will have already aired, as it is scheduled to be released on Saturday, 15 June, but fans can enjoy the episode once again on the big screen.

Vue, Odeon, Cineworld and more will be screening the two-part finale cinematic event at multiple locations across the country including London, Birmingham, and Manchester.

The screenings will all start at the same time, 11pm, so that the screening of Empire of Death begins at midnight —which is when the episode will become available on BBC iPlayer for those at home. Tickets are available to book now on the Doctor Who in Cinemas website.

Davies said in a statement: "This is a great big rip-roaring finale with the Doctor, Ruby and friends old and new fighting the greatest enemy of their lives. I can't wait for everyone to see it!"

This of course isn't the first time that Doctor Who has aired episodes on the big screen, as the series' 50th anniversary episode, The Day of the Doctor, was screened in cinemas back in 2013. The episode marked David Tennant's reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor opposite Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor.

It also saw Billie Piper return as a weapon called the Moment that used the image of Rose Tyler and starred John Hurt as the War Doctor. Peter Capaldi, who was the next Doctor at the time, also made an appearance in the episode.

The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death will premiere in cinemas on Friday, 21 June, with Empire of Death being released on BBC iPlayer at midnight on 22 June. It will also air on BBC One later that same day.
