Doctor Who fans will get an extra dose of Time Lord action when the much-loved and long-running sci-fi series returns later this year thanks to the new documentary-style series Doctor Who: Unleashed.

Revealed in late September, this behind-the-scenes spin-off shares some familiar DNA with Doctor Who Confidential, the BBC documentary series that ran between 2005 and 2011 when producer Russell T Davies was spearheading the Doctor’s adventures.

A new edition of Doctor Who: Unleashed will air after each new episode of Doctor Who when the show returns later this year in November, although a solid air date for these new episodes has yet to be confirmed.

Offering Doctor Who fanatics an inside look at the show’s return, Doctor Who: Unleashed will be fronted by presenter Steffan Powell, who viewers may recognise from BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat.

He’ll accompany viewers through the set and speak to an array of the show’s biggest names, getting up close and personal to the filming process and sharing unexpected tidbits from each new episode as they air.

The series will mark Powell’s debut fronting a Doctor Who-themed show and set the series apart from its predecessor, Doctor Who Confidential, which was also overseen by Davies.

While exact details of who will pop up during each show are still up in the air, it’s likely that Powell will get exclusive chats with many of the new series’ key players as well as the talented production folks that help bring the show to life.

Speaking about getting the chance to present the series, Powell said: “When you’re told Russell T Davies is asking for you to present a show, you say, ‘When does he want me?’ Doesn’t matter, I’ll be there.

"There’s a really fun and fascinating group of people bringing Doctor Who to life - I can’t wait for the audience to meet them. I’m so chuffed to have been trusted to help tell, in all its glory, the story of what goes into making the magic happen."

Davies added: "Over the years, I meet so many people who were inspired to find careers in TV, because of the behind-the-scenes material the BBC would show. And now it’s back, in the grand old tradition of Doctor Who Confidential, but in a brand new form, Unleashed!

"So a whole new generation – and faithful fans of old – can see what the stars and the crew get up to behind the cameras."

While future spin-offs are still unconfirmed, with Davies back at the reigns, it remains possible that we could see more shows of a similar ilk to Doctor Who: Unleashed in the near future.

Throughout the five years when Davies previously produced the show, he also released sister series Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, the latter of which was aimed at kids.

Doctor Who: Unleashed will air after new episodes of Doctor Who in November 2023.
