Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat has teased what fans can expect from Nicola Coughlan's performance in the upcoming Christmas special.

The Bridgerton star was spotted filming the long-running sci-fi show in Wales last year, with showrunner Russell T Davies later revealing that she would be featured in the 2024 festive episode.

While it’s not yet been confirmed who the actor will be playing, Moffat has warned fans that she’ll have them reaching for the tissues.

"Nicola is wonderful in it. She will break your heart," he recently told Ireland AM.

"I'm not allowed to say anything about it. At least I think I'm not allowed to say anything about it so I'll just shut up," he added.

Addressing her appearance in the episode earlier this year, Coughlan expressed her excitement and joked about trying to catch up on the show’s history after being cast.

"It's really exciting," she said. "I got the call from Russell T Davies, and he was like, 'Come and hang out with us in Cardiff', and I was like, 'Okay! I know nothing, but I will come'.

"I tried to read the Doctor Who Wikipedia page, and that's, like, a novel in itself. So I don't think I'm going to get from the 1960s to now in my head.

"But [Ncuti Gatwa] is incredible in the role... It was very fun. I think it was meant to be a secret that it was Christmas, but then Russell told everyone.”

Meanwhile, Davies recently promised fans that they'll also get some answers about Anita Dobson's enigmatic character Mrs Flood in the special, teasing the "ride of a lifetime."

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
