Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party has won by a landslide, ending 14 years of Tory rule.

With most of all 650 seats now counted, Labour looks set to secure one of its biggest ever majorities in the House of Commons. Sir Keir has said that "change begins now" and vowed to always put “country first, party second.”

In its manifesto, Labour sold itself as the party of “wealth creation”, with the aim of improving living standards for working people.

Among many other things, the party also said it wanted to add 20% VAT to private school fees, build 300,000 new homes a year, and restore plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030.

So when will Labour actually come into power?

Labour leader and incoming prime minister Sir Keir Starmer will be officially appointed by the King at Buckingham Palace later today, Friday. But forming a government will take longer.

Sir Keir is believed to already have his shadow cabinet ready to go, as he forms a new team of 22 ministers who are responsible for key areas. These include education, transport, and the economy.

Following his latest reshuffle in September 2023, Sir Keir said: "“I’m really pleased that having put in the hard yards to change the Labour Party, we now have such a strong team on the pitch that is ready to deliver the change our country desperately needs".

So it appears the public won't have long to wait.
