WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI BELOW!

The announcement of Star Wars Episode VIII's title as The Last Jedi kicked off a crazy amount of speculation.

Was that 'Jedi' plural or 'Jedi' singular? Is Luke the Last Jedi, or is it someone else, totally unexpected? Would the Jedi really "end" in this movie?

The film is out now (in the UK, at least), so we finally have the definitive answer.

(This is your final warning for spoilers.)

To be honest, it works out in about the way you would expect.

Writer-director Rian Johnson had already confirmed – going into the film at least – that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is the Last Jedi, his training temple having been destroyed by his nephew Ben Solo/Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Disillusioned by his failures and the (admittedly totally dire) track record of the Jedi, Luke has decided to pack it all in and leave the Force to get along on its own.

And so he tells Daisy Ridley's Rey that he is the Last Jedi. There will be no more on his watch.

Of course, he's had a change of heart by the film's climax. When Kylo taunts him with the fact that Luke is the Last Jedi, he responds by saying that the Jedi's legacy will continue with Rey. He is no longer the Last Jedi.

What will come next for the order probably won't be revealed until Episode IX. There's a question mark over Luke's ultimate fate, and if she finds herself lacking a teacher, will Rey be enough to continue the Jedi? Will she try to start her own school? And will she succeed with Kylo Ren trying to crush her and the Resistance? Only time will tell.
