With the new university year just around the corner, many people will be hoping to get onto their course of choice - or second choice via UCAS’ Clearing scheme. Clearing is a second chance for students to get a place at university, by matching those that want a university place to universities with unfilled places.

You've been able to apply for clearance since June 30 and if you didn’t receive any offers, or none that you wanted to accept. You can also apply for it provided you decline your first choice using the ‘decline my place’ button in your application, or if you didn’t meet the conditions of your offers.

Clearing opened on July 5 and runs up to and including October 21 this year. Many peoples’ university offers will be contingent on their A Level results, which come out on Thursday, August 15, with schools and colleges receiving results the day before (Wednesday, August 14).

How to apply through Clearing

You can speak to an adviser at your school or college and you can use the UCAS search tool to look for courses. Make sure you keep checking too, as although you might search for what you want and get nothing, universities regularly update with vacancies.

Before you add a Clearing choice in your application, you need to contact the university and give them your Clearing number (it’s in your application), and Personal ID, so they can look it up. And remember, only add a Clearing choice once you have permission from the university.
