Dominic Calvert-Lewin's advice helped seal £40m Newcastle United move

Should Newcastle United complete a deal for Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, it will see him reunited with former Toffees team-mate Anthony Gordon at St James' Park.

Gordon, of course, came through the academy system at Everton and his performances at Goodison Park convinced United to part with £40million to secure his signature in January 2023.

After a shaky start to his life at Newcastle, Gordon has cemented himself as one of the club's most important players, scoring 12 goals and grabbing 11 assists last season as he earned a place in England's EURO 2024 squad.

At Everton, he played alongside Calvert-Lewin and the pair struck up a close bond both on and off the pitch. Calvert-Lewin, who is an England international himself, of course, once gave Gordon advice just months before he made the move to Newcastle.

With Everton struggling in the league and Gordon suffering a dip in form after a failed summer move to Chelsea, the 27-year-old's advice helped Gordon to rediscover his form and, ultimately, secure a move to St James' Park.

“He's a strong-minded boy," Calvert-Lewin told the Liverpool Echo after Gordon scored in a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in October 2022.

"That's a big strength of his and credit to him for how he's bounced back from that criticism because in football, things can change very quickly and people's opinions of you can change very quickly.

“I've been part of that at times in my career so I always try and give any words of wisdom and advice that I can to him. I always say that the best way to reply to those kinds of things is to score goals and play well.

“I just say, from my own experience, just keep believing in what you do, keep believing in yourself and you'll reap the rewards. He's done that today and got his goal.”

Chronicle Live understands Newcastle have made an enquiry over Calvert-Lewin's availability this summer and any move for the Sheffield United academy graduate could well trigger the departure of long-serving forward Callum Wilson.
