Apple brings back saucy peach emoji after outcry from phone users

When Apple updated its emoji set for iOS 10, it smoothed out the much-loved peach so it looked like a piece of fruit instead of a bum.

Which is all very well, but nobody in the world was using the peach emoji to indicate that they were about to enjoy a delicious piece of fruit. Nobody was texting to say please buy me a peach on your way home. Nobody was trying to send the text of the book Each Peach Pear Plum.

It was a bum. A funny bum, a sexting bum, a stinky bum: in short, a bum.

Naturally, there was outrage on social media – outrage, followed by mourning, followed by campaigning – when the software update trickled out to iPhones and iPads.

Happily, Apple has seen the error of its ways, and last night rushed out an update that returns the peach to its derriere-like shape.

If anything, the new peach is even more bum-like than it was before anyone messed with it. Observe: pre-messing with, the peach was slightly duller, a little less freckly and the, er, crack was less pronounced.

But behold the new extra-peachy peach emoji:

It’s shiny, it’s more shadowy and its freckles lend it a more bum-like air.

On social media, there is champagne popping and party emoji galore as users realised the peach had been returned to its rightful bumliness:

It hasn’t solved all the world’s problems – but it’s certainly one less thing that 2016 has ruined. Thanks Apple.
