Double-decker trains could soon be pulling into British railway stations.

In an effort to improve the commuter experience by cutting down on overcrowding, designers are working on ways to introduce two-tiered trains.

According to a report by The Times, the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) is running a competition for designers to come up with ways to bring the trains to the UK.

The challenge of introducing double-decker trains in Britain - they are already used in various other European countries - is to find a way for them to negotiate low bridges and tunnels.

Proposals include lowering carriages towards the tracks and creating aisles down the side of compartments on both decks.

The new concepts for double-decker trains could be introduced on Britain’s busiest railway lines between 2022 and 2022, according to the RSSB’s competition.

A demo model of the new design - the Aeroliner 3000 - will be built next year to be presented at trade shows.

The RSSB’s Trevor Bradbury told The Times: “When you walk on to a train nowadays, you step up on to the carriage. There is actually a lot of space that you can use beneath the vehicle, which is what this design does.”
