A new drive-thru Starbucks on the edge of a major Leicestershire housing development has been approved. Dozens of jobs are expected to be created as part of the move.

The Clowes Developments application emerged last year and was part of efforts to add to the wider Stud Brook Business Park in Castle Donington’s Welsted Road. Hundreds of new homes are being built in the area which is just a stone’s throw away from East Midlands Airport.

The single-storey drive-thru coffee shop will boast interior seating for indoor eating alongside its takeaway provisions. 22 parking spaces, including three disabled bays, form the drive-thru’s car park, with access made “easily visible” from the roadside.

Starbucks claimed the new shop had been designed for “optimum” use and will provide customers with a “unique Starbucks experience”. The Welsted Road site will not have a kitchen, but will serve hot and cold drinks for eating in and taking away.

The drive-thru will create nine full-time jobs and 12 full-time positions, including shop floor and store management roles. Clowes Developments had claimed the coffee shop had “high quality design aesthetics” that would “enhance the area” and would provide a boost for both jobs and facilities for residents.

Officials on North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) agreed and approved the scheme this week. In documents, the council said Clowes had “acted proactively” throughout the planning process to make improvements to the scheme. They said the drive-thru would help the area and was a “sustainable” development.

Meanwhile, officials are still to decide on a new Sainsbury’s store for the Stud Brook Business Park area. That proposal, which replaced ideas for a pub on the major housing development, could create 20 new jobs, with NWLDC set to decide on it at a later date.
