Driver Charged after Allegedly Striking, Killing Ga. Girl Crossing Street to Board School Bus

An 8-year-old Georgia girl has died after she was hit by a car while trying to get on her school bus.

According to WSB-TV 2, police say Adalynn Pierce of Henry County was trying to get on her school bus on Thursday when a driver allegedly passed the vehicle despite the fact that it had a stop sign.

PEOPLE previously reported that the Rock Spring Elementary school student was crossing the street at the time.

Per WSB-TV 2, WJCL and 11Alive, police arrested 25-year-old Kaylee Andre, who is currently being held in the Henry County Jail.

She is charged with homicide by vehicle, failure to stop for a school bus loading and unloading and failure to exercise due care, according to multiple outlets. It's unclear if she has retained an attorney or entered pleas.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Georgia State Patrol for comment.

Adalynn’s mother Ashley opened up to 11Alive about her daughter. The girl will be donating eight of her organs, according to the nonprofit organization Caring for a Cause.

“Her heart feels for the whole world. If she knows that there is a need out there, it makes her soul so happy to pray for them,” Ashley said of Adalynn.

The mother also spoke about how she and her family forgive the driver who hit Adalynn, explaining that it was the woman who called the police and “she stayed by my side the whole time.”

“When the accident happened, she stayed by my side the whole time, she's the one who called 911 for me and she just kept screaming how sorry she was and how sorry she was,” Ashley told the station. “Law enforcement has said she has been nothing but cooperative the whole time.”

PEOPLE previously reported that Adalynn was critically injured after emergency medical personnel performed a "life-saving measure" before she was flown via helicopter to Egelston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta,  per Georgia State Patrol.
