Driver injured after car hits stationary vehicle 'near central reservation' with no lights on A1 in Northumberland

A motorist was taken to hospital after a car collided with a vehicle that was stationary on the A1 and had no lights illuminated.

Police were called to reports of a vehicle being driven erratically on the A1 between Seaton Burn and Stannington on Thursday night. When police arrived on the scene a second car had collided with the vehicle, which was stationary near the central reservation with no lights illuminated.

The northbound carriageway was closed to allow the vehicles to be recovered, reopening just after midnight. One driver was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment, with no one believed to have suffered serious injuries.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just before 8.45pm yesterday (Thursday), we received a report that a vehicle was being driven erratically on the A1 northbound, near to the A19 in Stannington.

“As police arrived on scene, a second car has collided with the vehicle from the initial report, which was stationary near to the central reservation with no lights illuminated. Thankfully, no-one involved is believed to have suffered serious injuries and one driver was taken to hospital for treatment.

“The northbound carriageway was closed completely to allow for the vehicles to be recovered, however re-opened to the public just after midnight.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We dispatched one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team and two double crewed ambulances. One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary."
