Drivers in England warned to 'stay off motorway' until 6am on Monday

Holidaymakers heading for Gatwick and Heathrow this weekend have been warned. Motorists driving on the M25 and nearby this weekend have been warned due to a closure from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Monday next week.

National Highways will move to shut the motorway between Junctions 10 and 11 in Surrey from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Monday. RAC breakdown spokeswoman Alice Simpson advised: "Following two successful M25 closures with no significant delays, there's no reason why this weekend can't go smoothly too, providing drivers plan their journeys well in advance and follow the official diversion routes.

"Whilst festival-goers in the city centre will likely find it easier to travel by train and Tube, there are certain trips, like airport runs, where car travel is more convenient, especially when laden with luggage. We're urging holidaymakers to plan ahead, which includes checking their route before setting off, leaving earlier than usual and importantly, ensuring their vehicles are road-ready by checking oil, coolant and tyres to maximise their chances of avoiding a breakdown."

The closure comes on a bumper weekend for sport with Wimbledon taking place, as the Women's Singles final is held on Saturday and Gentlemen's Singles a day later on Sunday. Chris Wood, AA Patrol of the Year, warned: "With the weather forecast looking up and many football fans planning to visit friends to support their national team, it's expected to be incredibly busy in and around London, particularly the M25 Junctions 10 to 11. We advise drivers to plan their journey accordingly, avoid the west side of the M25 if possible, but if not, expect delays and stick to the detour routes."

Other sporting events this weekend include England versus New Zealand at Eden Park in rugby union, while England could be in the Euro 2024 final. National Highways senior project manager Jonathan Wade said: "The previous two closures have gone well, with significant progress being made during both.

"We would urge all drivers to follow the official diversion route as this is the best chance of reaching your destination in good time. Please ignore your satnavs and follow our diversion route instead."
