Drivers face £1,000 fine for flying England flag on car during Euro 2024

Football fans are being cautioned that they could be hit with fines of up to £1,000 or points on their driving licence if they don't comply with rules about flying the England flag. The St George's Cross is a common sight on cars, especially on match days across the nation - and will be again this summer during Euro 2024 as Gareth Southgate's team aims to secure a trophy for the first time since 1966.

However, some motorists might not be aware of key regulations concerning these flags. If a flag is displayed in a way that it could obstruct a driver's view, then the driver could find themselves in trouble.

Any flag that is put up must not obstruct the driver's view of any windows or rear-view mirrors, as this could lead to road accidents. The flag could also block other drivers' views or cause an unnecessary distraction for other road users.

Police have the power to remove it and issue fines or points if they deem the flag to be unsafe, according to the Express. In some cases, any of the above offences could result in a fine of up to £1,000, or potentially three points on your licence.

Prior to the laws being relaxed in 2010, it was possible to receive a fine of up to £2,500 for a flag-related mishap, reports Birmingham Live. For those wishing to fly the flag on their properties, there's no need for planning permission. As long as the flag is within the homeowner's boundaries, it can be flown.

However, if a flag partially obscures a neighbour's windows, residents have the right to request its removal. If the homeowner refuses, neighbours have the right to report them to the local planning enforcement officer.
