Drivers who use sponge to wash their car warned to 'stop'

Drivers who use a sponge to clean their cars and wash it have been warned to stop. Motorists have been warned by mechanic Scotty Kilmer who has explained how using sponges to wash down the bodywork could “scratch the paint”.

In a YouTube video, Scotty said: “Today I'm going to show you why you should never use a sponge to wash your car. Okay I admit when I was young I used to use sponges because I was stupid and I didn’t know any better. Today I threw the sponge away and use a wool mitt. Sponges can scratch your paint. Wool mittens are soft, they just clean.”

In reply, a motorist said: "Never were your keys on the outside side of your clothing while washing your car. This could put a big scratch in your paint job. Sorry, Scotty!" A second said: "You know what else scratches the crap out of your car? Going through a car wash with brushes. Always go through a touchless wash."

"The reason for not using dish washing liquid is because it's a caustic and will eventually eat the protective layer then flake your paint," another said. "McGuire's wash and wax that yellow stuff you got there Scotty that's some good stuff. Been using it for years. With wool mit," another wrote.

And another said: "I use micro fiber towels. It takes about 12 to wash the entire car. I put the rag in soapy water and wash the roof then I toss it and get another foor the hood. Then the trunk. So you never put a dirty towel in the water. I never use high pressure.

"Soak the car and let it sit for a minute. Then rinse the dirt. Dry it next and then apply wax or a coat of whatever u use." Another said: "I thought you were going to warn against going through the brush carwash. It’s only touch-free for me."
