Motorists could see a significant improvement in their fuel economy by simply adding a widely available solution to their vehicles, according to Crystal Voogd, an expert at '5 Star Loans'. They recommend using "energy conserving" oil, which includes "friction-reducing additives" that can enhance efficiency.

This could be a boon for drivers looking to save money at the pumps with fuel prices remaining steep. Crystal advised: "Opt for motor oils labelled as 'energy conserving'. These oils contain friction-reducing additives that improve fuel economy."

Engine oil is essential for maintaining vehicle components lubricated and preventing excessive friction that can cause damage.

Experts at Mobil have also highlighted the importance of reducing friction to conserve fuel, stating: "The use of lower viscosity oils can help support efficiency and improve fuel economy by decreasing engine friction."

In related news, the RAC has reported that despite a decrease in fuel costs, drivers are still being charged too much at petrol stations. The RAC noted that the average price for a litre of unleaded has fallen by 2.4p, bringing it down to 147.88p from 150.31p, potentially saving motorists approximately £1.30 per tank, reports the Express.

However, supermarket prices were down just 1.2p suggesting motorists should be receiving more discounts than they are currently getting.

Meanwhile, the RAC Fuel Watch comparison site stressed that petrol and diesel prices 'should fall". The RAC has previously admitted the role that good quality motor oil could play in helping drivers cut back on fuel usage. They explained: "Motor oil can also improve fuel economy, cool the engine, and reduce emissions. "Depending on the type of oil your vehicle requires, you should consider its additives.

"Additives are chemicals that are added to the oil to improve its performance. Common additives include detergents, dispersants, and anti-wear agents. These additives can help keep your engine clean and running smoothly."
