A Tinwald-based canine charity raised the woof at its first fundraising outing of the year on Saturday.

Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue, which operates from Damhead Kennels, added more than £230 to its coffers at a coffee morning at Dalbeattie Makers Market.

Four greyhounds accompanied the charity’s volunteers at the 10am to 2pm event.

Speaking afterwards, co-founder Margaret Hill was delighted with the public response.

She told the Standard: “The day went very well and we made £231.90 in total, which was great.

“Nobody in the charity is paid so all the money will go towards things such as neutering, speying and trips to the vet. Sometimes we have to go and pick a dog up and the kennelling, which we have to pay for. We have foster people as well and they are provided with muzzles, collars and food for the greyhounds.

“We had a stall at the market and ran the coffee morning as well.

“The response was very good – it’s all about promoting the dogs.”

Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue recently rehomed its 2,000th greyhound in Dalbeattie.

However, there can often be a delay between a visit to the stall and people deciding to consider rehoming a greyhound.

“Sometimes it can be three months down the line that people remember us,” Margaret explained.

“We have a number of home checks going on at the moment, which is very encouraging.

“Thanks to the publicity people have really got to know us.”

Margaret added: “We have another milestone coming up – our 2024th dog in 2024.

“And the way things are going that will be sooner rather than later.”

The charity celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022 and operates a successful charity shop in Lockerbie.
