Dwayne Johnson offers Moana remake updateDisney

Dwayne Johnson has offered an update on the live-action remake of Moana.

Disney surprised fans last week by announcing it would release an animated Moana sequel later this year, on top of the live-action version that's been in development for quite some time.

While there's not much known about the animated Moana 2 yet, Johnson has confirmed that he will be reprising his role as the demigod Maui in the live-action version alongside a newcomer in the title role.

"One of the exciting things about that was actually finding our Moana and how exciting that has been," he told Entertainment Tonight. "The global search to find our Moana, which – between you and I, we found her – not gonna tell you yet. [It's] very exciting."

He reiterated that Lin-Manuel Miranda will create new music for the live-action version, much like he did for the original. This remake will be directed by Thomas Kail, who previously collaborated with Lin-Manuel on Hamilton and In the Heights.

"The scale [of the Moana remake] should be beautiful," Johnson added.

Auliʻi Cravalho had previously announced she will not reprise her title role but remains involved as an executive producer.

"I am truly honoured to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honour our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that helped inspire her story, and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come," she wrote on Instagram.

Johnson also touched on the animated Moana 2, which he promised will be "cutting edge" and feature "all-new music". Disney confirmed last week that Moana 2 originally started as a TV series, but was expanded to a film after impressing executives.

Moana is available to stream now on Disney+, and its sequel will release on November 27, 2024. The live-action remake begins filming later this year.
