Dwayne Johnson Suffers Elbow Injury on A24 Wrestling Drama ‘The Smashing Machine’

“Any time your film is called The Smashing Machine, you’re going to kind of get smashed up.” That’s how Dwayne Johnson put it, as he revealed he suffered an injury on his right elbow while filming his new wrestling drama for A24.

“I got banged up pretty good today in our scenes. There might be some soft tissue fluid in there, we’ll see,” Johnson said Tuesday in a video posted to Instagram. “But the pain feels pretty good. All good.”

He said he will need to have fluid drained before having an MRI to assess the damage.

Johnson stars in The Smashing Machine as Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion. Uncut Gems co-director Benny Safdie wrote and directs the project, which is being positioned as a prestige play for Johnson, who became one of the world’s top movie stars in big-budget fare such as the Fast & Furious movies, Jumanji films, and disaster pics such as San Andreas and Rampage.

Emily Blunt stars alongside Johnson as Dawn Staples, the wife of his character Mark Kerr. The pair previously worked together on Disney’s Jungle Cruise.

Johnson and Safdie took a break from production last month to fly to the Cannes Film Festival for a conversation with buyers about the project, which Johnson is producing via his Seven Bucks Productions. Other producers include Seven Bucks’ Dany Garcia, Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush and David Koplan. The film does not yet have a release date.
