Dwight Yoakam and Emily Joyce have been together for many years.

In May 2020, the couple shared in an announcement that they were married. They also revealed that they began dating in 2010 and had been engaged for several years.

"Dwight Yoakam and Emily Joyce wed in March just before the quarantine in a private ceremony at St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica," a rep for the musician confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE, referencing the COVID-19 pandemic. "At a time when there is so much uncertainty in the world, there are still happy moments."

The pair exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony in Santa Monica, California, in front of less than 10 attendees who were all seated at least six feet from one another.

Yoakam shared two photos of himself with his bride on their wedding day on Instagram along with the announcement.

Although the couple kept their relationship out of the headlines, they did make public appearances together over the years.

They were spotted attending the 2019 GQ Men of the Year After Party in December 2019, as well as the 67th Annual BMI Country Awards in November 2019, and the 59th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2017.

Yoakam and Joyce delayed their wedding announcement

While the pair married in March 2020, they waited to make an official announcement until May 2020 out of sensitivity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This belated announcement was withheld out of respect to so many people affected by and on the front lines of this pandemic,” the couple’s announcement read.

Yoakam opened up to PEOPLE in 2012 about his unique home in the Hollywood Hills, which he described as a sunny art-filled Spanish colonial-style home with “a Mediterranean vernacular."

"I picked every door hinge, every piece of tile, every lamp,” he said. “I was here every day during construction. It was my job site."

At the time, he also noted that it’s where he wrote his album, 3 Pears, and Joyce was in his life.

“My artwork kind of oscillates around me when I’m writing songs,” he explained. “There’s a bit of musical frenzy in this record. It’s about having fun and rediscovering love,” adding he was “very happy” in a year-and-a-half relationship at the time with Joyce.

“Love is something we have to seek out every day inside ourselves," Yoakam concluded.

Their home base is quite different from Joyce's roots, who hails from Omaha, Nebraska. Similarly, Yoakam was born in Kentucky and grew up in Ohio.
