The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) could provide an additional £434 per month to individuals living with a disability or long-term illness. However, many are unaware that they could qualify.

Attendance Allowance offers extra funds to assist with living costs and support related to health conditions or disabilities. It is available to anyone facing additional costs due to their ailment or disability, although it does not cover mobility needs.

It is estimated that up to a million eligible individuals are not claiming this benefit. This means that they are missing out on an annual top-up of approximately £5,600, reports LancsLive.

Anyone requiring help or supervision during the day or night could qualify, even if they do not receive care. This can cover common issues ranging from arthritis to visual impairment.

Extra funds to assist with care costs are provided at two rates, with a higher rate for those with additional needs. The money, intended to maintain people's independence and keep them in their own homes for longer, is distributed at either £72.65 per week, or £108.55.

These payments are deposited into bank accounts every four weeks. The higher rate is awarded to claimants who require assistance or supervision throughout the day and night, or those who have been given a prognosis of 12 months or less to live by a medical professional.

Every year, Attendance Allowance assists 1.5 million individuals. According to data from the DWP, 1,127,242 of these individuals live with at least one of the following ten conditions:

  • Arthritis - 435,340

  • Dementia - 158,038

  • Heart Disease - 110,666

  • Respiratory Conditions - 91,476

  • Disease Of The Muscles, Bones or Joints - 76,133

  • Cerebrovascular Disease - 70,213

  • Back Pain - 66,304

  • Visual Disorders and Diseases - 47,333

  • Parkinson's - 40,124

  • Neurological Conditions - 31,615

The above list is not a checklist for claiming Attendance Allowance. Instead, it's meant to help people comprehend what types of conditions are being supported.

Anyone who requires additional support during the day or night due to a long-term illness, disability, or health condition is advised to consult the official eligibility guidance on the GOV. UK website here.
