A number of payment date changes for people on certain benefits will take place this year. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) changes the dates when some benefits are paid due to bank holidays.

People on universal credit, PIP and other benefits who were due their money on Monday, May 6 were paid early on Friday, May 3 instead due to the May bank holiday. This is because DWP offices, job centres and helplines were not open due to the bank holiday.

There are a number of other dates when benefits will be paid early in 2024. To get the latest money stories straight to your inbox twice a week sign up to our newsletter here.

There are four more bank holidays taking place in the UK this year and they are as follows:

  • Monday, May 27 - spring bank holiday

  • Monday, August 26 - summer bank holiday

  • Wednesday, December 25 - Christmas Day

  • Thursday, December 26 - Boxing Day

On each of these dates, benefits will be paid out on the previous working day, meaning you will get your money earlier than usual. This only applies if you are due to receive your benefits on the day of the bank holiday. If you are due to get them on any other day before or after, your payment date will not change and you will receive them as normal.

For example, on May 27, benefits will be paid on Friday, May 24 instead. In August, anyone due payments on August 26 will get them on Friday, August 23 instead. While this is good news as it means you'll get your money early, you will have to wait longer until your next payment and make your money last longer.

The exact benefits being paid early have not been confirmed but bank holiday changes usually apply to the following:
