DWP warning for Universal Credit claimants who plan holiday abroad

Universal Credit claimants have been issued a serious warning by a personal finance expert who has underlined a crucial point when it comes to travelling abroad.

Adam Pope, of Spencer Churchill Claims Advice, said failure to follow the key rule could result in a loss of benefits. He emphasised the need for Universal Credit recipients to be clued up about their obligations before jetting off.

It's vital to notify the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) if you're heading overseas, as failing to do so can interfere with your benefit payments. He explained: "While you may enjoy the flexibility of travelling abroad while receiving Universal Credit, it's important to remember that certain obligations, such as job search activities, still apply.

"You must stick to your claimant commitment, including fulfilling work-related requirements, even during overseas travel."

But there's more to watch out for. Adam particularly pointed out what is expected from those in the intensive work group.

He added: "This includes those in the intensive work group, who are expected to dedicate 35 to 37 hours a week to job search activities, which remains unchanged during holidays or trips abroad. Understanding the circumstances that warrant an extension of the one-month limit for overseas travel is essential.

"Be aware of exceptions such as bereavement, medical treatment, or specific job circumstances, which may allow for extended absence without affecting your benefit entitlement. Failure to follow notification requirements or exceeding the one-month limit for overseas travel can impact your Universal Credit payments.

"While your benefits may not be terminated altogether, you should be prepared for potential adjustments to your assessment period and payment schedule. Before making travel arrangements, consider the impact on your benefit entitlement and follow DWP regulations.

"Proper notification to the DWP about your intention to travel abroad and the reasons behind it is essential to avoid potential disruptions in your benefit payments. Additionally, understand that your benefits can continue for up to one month while abroad, but with the expectation of fulfilling claimant commitments, such as job search activities for a smooth transition during your overseas travel."
