East Texas recovers from severe flooding, storms

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Parts of East Texas are still being affected by recent storms but things are improving in Trinity County.

Heavy weekend storms resulted in a giant hole forming in Anderson county.

“The damage there was pretty extensive,” Jeff Williford, Tyler Division of the Texas Department of Transportation(TxDOT), said.

Part of the road is gone completely, TxDOT says it’s from recent storms. TxDOT said they aren’t sure when exactly the washout occurred.

“Crews were able to respond quickly,” Williford, said. “Able to assess the damage.”

Construction crews at the scene said they arrived sometime sunday.

“[It’s] going to take at least until the end of this week, if not into next week,” Williford added. “Just trying to make sure that motorists are aware of that. We just want to make sure that the repairs are done correctly.”

Trinity County has faced severe weather including a tornado that killed a police lieutenant causing the county to issue a disaster declaration.

“That water level out there is higher than it’s ever been in anyone’s memory,” Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said.

After approximately a week Sheriff Wallace said that things are getting better.

“The good news is it’s pretty much gone,” Wallace said. “There’s still some yards that are flooded but it’s pretty much out of the houses now.”

At one point water levels were so high, that officials had to rescue residents and pets from their homes using boats.

Power outages that were affecting residents have started to resolve as well.

“Power has been restored to all of the house in there,” Wallace said. “With the exception of one house.”

Sheriff Wallace said his focus now is getting people back to their normal lives.

“Trying to help people get back on their feet with food, clothing, and water,” Wallace added.

On Monday during a news conference, in Conroe, just north of Houston, Governor Gregg Abbot confirmed the lieutenant’s death in Trinity County. It’s one of three fatalities in the state because of the recent bad weather.
