EastEnders airs Janine Butcher update after exit

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has aired a big update on Janine Butcher following her recent exit.

Janine was arrested at Christmas time for her numerous crimes, including contributing to Mick Carter's disappearance at sea as he tried to stop her from hurting Linda.

Linda had been worried about facing Janine in court until she found out Janine had made a plea deal that involved her admitting guilt. This meant there would be no trial.

However, Linda was nervous in Tuesday's (May 2) episode because Janine's sentencing hearing was looming — at the same time as she's putting the finishing touches on selling the pub.

Linda got a call from the court early in the episode but kept the news to herself. Alfie realised what was going on and did his research to discover Janine had only been sentenced to five years behind bars.

"You're joking," he declared while reading the news.

The rest of the episode saw Linda struggling with losing Mick, even admitting she envied Jay Brown because he gets a chance to say goodbye to Lola Pearce.

Linda was feeling so out of sorts that she dropped the bombshell on Alfie and Kathy that she couldn't host the coronation party as planned.

While Linda's story will continue, former cast member Charlie Brooks spoke this week about the possibility of Janine Butcher returning to the Square.

The actress hinted she'd be open to another short stint in Walford at some point, adding to The Sun: "I couldn't play her constantly and I don't think anyone would want me to. I think somebody might actually kill me if Janine was always in their living rooms four times a week."

Maybe Janine will be let out prison early on good behaviour? (Probably not…)

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
