EastEnders star Jake Wood celebrates sobriety milestone

Former EastEnders actor Jake Wood has marked two decades sober in a new social media post.

The Max Branning star took to X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram as he welcomed in the New Year yesterday (January 1), sharing a video from a hot tub as he celebrated the milestone.

"Just reflecting on how grateful I am for the amazing things I've got in my life," Jake began. "I've got an amazing family, beautiful family. Fantastic friends. Everyone's happy and healthy.

"Also – and I don’t really talk about this often – I just want to say that tonight I’m 20 years sober," he continued. "I stopped drinking 20 years ago tonight and that changed my life in so many ways. It's immeasurable.

"So anyone on the same journey, I send you love, support, and to anyone struggling there’s help out there. You can do it. Love you guys."

In the caption, the actor added: "I am 20 years sober tonight. So proud of myself and for anyone out there on a similar journey.

"If you are struggling there is help out there, please reach out and believe me if I did it you can too. Sending you all love & strength and a happy and healthy 2024."

The star has since received support in the replies, with fellow EastEnders star Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater) posting a red heart emoji on Instagram, while Jamie Lomas (Jake Stone) wrote: "Happy New year pal".

Heather Peace (Eve Unwin) said on X: "HNY Jake & congratulations. Love to you & yours mate x".

Jake last appeared as Max on the soap back in 2021, admitting at the time that he found his exit "emotional". Later that year, the actor revealed he was open to a return in the future.

"It was hard graft, but I'm really pleased that they've left the door open for the character to return," he told The Mirror. "Never say never."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
