EastEnders updates fans on Janine Butcher after Christmas exit

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Janine Butcher is facing time behind bars following an update in EastEnders.

The legendary soap villain exited Albert Square at Christmas after her plot to frame Linda Carter for drink driving was finally outed to would-be husband Mick.

An ensuing chase ultimately led to Mick going missing and being presumed dead, adding yet another person to Janine's body count in Walford.

In Monday's episode (March 27), Linda was worried she wouldn't be able to put that terrible time behind her as she waited for news from her lawyer on Janine's criminal case.

She received support from friends Alfie Moon and Sharon Watts, both of whom encouraged her to attend the gym reopening as a means of keeping her mind off Janine.

Linda found more comfort than she expected at the Albert Square event, as she learned both her family and the Moons have a long history with boxing.

Later, Linda finally received the news she'd be spared having to testify at a trial because Janine had formally pleaded guilty.

"There's no trial. I'm not going to have to face her in court," Linda told Alfie.

While this big development suggests Janine won't be showing up in Walford any time soon, Charlie Brooks has refused to rule out reprising the role someday.

"But I always say: 'Never say never'. EastEnders is home to me, and I've had a fantastic time, so I'd be open to a return for sure," she said.

The actress has also recently spoke quite movingly about how she's battled Imposter Syndrome her entire career, since she skipped drama school to land her job in EastEnders.

Brooks has lined up a new job with The National Theatre in a production of Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
