Easton Lodge gardens celebrate 386th Bomb Group's pivotal role in WWII

A garden-based tribute to Second World War operations and war history in the community is inviting public engagement.

On Sunday, July 21, Easton Lodge's Gardens commemorates D-Day with an exhibition dedicated to the 386th Bomb Group, known as the Marauders.

The group, stationed at Easton Lodge during the war, was selected by Eisenhower for their excellent record to carry out the pre-dawn bombing at Utah Beach on June 6, 1944 in Normandy.

The Gardens' Archivist has prepared the exhibition, comprising added features from D-Day commemoration displays.

Interactive learning about other American Mighty Eighth Air Force groups, homefront war efforts and military land vehicles form part of the programme.

The Essex and Suffolk Austin 7 Club, history groups and vehicle owners will all be in attendance.

A musical illustration of the era will be provided by Perfect Vintage, who will perform 1940s songs.

In tandem, visitors can explore history displays related to the First World War, and local history, and pay respects at the Glade's memorial area dedicated to lost lives.

The garden and its features including Harold Peto’s waterlily pond in the Italian segment, vibrant flowers and lush vegetable beds are open for exploration.

Fresh home-grown produce will also be available for purchase.

The Trust's volunteers have designed a Japanese-style garden at the bottom of the Glade, celebrating Peto’s pioneer efforts towards bringing Japanese gardening to Britain in 1902.

Children-friendly corners like a treehouse and tucked away elephant statue, as well as crafts and a children’s trail will keep young visitors entertained.

Information, plant and craft stalls will also be in place.

Culinary options have been managed by the Trust’s volunteers and include hot and cold beverages along with a variety of rolls and homemade cakes.

Dog owners can bring their pets, kept on a leash.

The Gardens' timing for the event is 11am to 5pm with tickets available via advance online purchasing.
