A flight out of Gatwick Airport had to be cancelled after the plane ended up on the grass next to the runway.

As it prepared to take off the easyJet plane ended up on the grassed area during pushback.

Passengers took to social media to vent their frustration. Sophie Thirlwell, who was in a window seat of the Amsterdam-bound plane, tweeted: ‘Trying to take off at @Gatwick_Airport and the ground crew have pushed our @easyJet aeroplane onto the grass #delayed #oops.’

The passengers were forced to dismbark and return to the terminal.

She also claimed she was told to stop taking pictures of the incident by ground crew.

Gatwick Airport confirmed the incident occurred at around 9am this morning. EasyJet said all passengers would be taken to Amsterdam via an alternative flight, which also ended up being delayed due to adverse weather in the Netherlands.

A statement from the airline said: ‘easyJet can confirm that flight EZY8871, which was due to depart from London Gatwick to Amsterdam this morning, was pushed onto the grass in error during pushback.

‘All passengers have disembarked the aircraft and will be departing on an alternative aircraft shortly. We would like to apologise to passengers for the delay.’
