Eclipse-themed exhibit opens Friday evening

Apr. 1—Arts Illiana will have its opening reception of "Hello Darkness" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the gallery. The exhibition is themed around the total solar eclipse on April 8.

On display will be 55 pieces of artworks submitted by 38 artists from around the country. Artist Todd Stokes was the juror for the event.

A special solo exhibition in the North Gallery will feature photographic work of artist Spencer Young, a landscape photographer. The photographic work on display reflects his twin interests in astronomy and travel. He traveled with group tours to view astronomical events that included total solar eclipses: Indonesia 1983, Caribbean Sea 1998, Turkey 1999 and 2006, West China 2008, Tahiti 2010, and Australia 2012, and transits of Venus: Greek Islands 2004, Central Asia 2012.

Stokes works several mediums including photography, 2-D and 3-D etched glass. Stokes will have two pieces of his artwork (also eclipse-inspired) on exhibit in the gallery.

The opening reception is free and open to the public. Eclipse posters by Micheal Moore, winner of the poster design contest, will be available for purchase. Eclipse viewing glasses will also be given out.

Arts Illiana is located at 23 North Sixth Street in downtown Terre Haute.
