Ed Norton is set to replace Benedict Cumberbatch in the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.

The film, which will be directed by James Mangold and star Wonka's Timothée Chalamet as the iconic crooner, will depict Dylan's rise to stardom in the New York music scene in 1965.

However, Cumberbatch, who was originally slated to play American singer Pete Seeger, has reportedly left the project due to scheduling conflicts, according to Deadline.

The cast also features Elle Fanning as Dylan's early '60s love interest Sylvie Russo.

Speaking previously about the film, Mangold – who also directed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – explained why the story was appealing to him, and confirmed that Chalamet will be providing his own vocals.

"It’s such an amazing time in American culture and the story of a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with, like, two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years," Mangold told Collider.

"First being embraced into the family of folk music in New York and then, of course, kind of outrunning them at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief. It’s such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in the American scene."

A Complete Unknown is said to be heading into production in New York in March 2024. The biopic will also portray the likes of Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez alongside Dylan and Seeger.

Chalamet most recently played the titular Willy Wonka in an origin story musical of the eccentric chocolatier, where he also provided his own vocals.

Director Paul King explained Chalamet had a "beautiful singing voice".

He continued: "The person it reminded me of was Bing Crosby. There's quite a range, because it does go from a couple of bigger, showstopper-y sort of things to moments of real, pure emotion and he can do it all."

Wonka is out now in cinemas and is available to buy or rent in the UK from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and more.
