Ed Sheeran hits back at Glastonbury critics

This year’s Glastonbury festival came to a spectacular end last night, with headliner Ed Sheeran taking to the Pyramid Stage as the final act of the weekend.

However, Ed’s showstopping performance, which was broadcast live on the BBC, sparked quite the debate, with the flame-haired star dividing viewers as some praised the singer for “killing it” and others said that he “wasn’t worthy” of the slot.

Alongside the criticism, many slammed Ed for “performing with a backing track”, disappointed that he wasn’t playing live and that he wasn’t joined by a big band on stage.

Now Ed has taken to social media to hit back at his critics, with the 26 year old admitting that he “never thought” he’d have to explain himself in such a way.

Writing on Twitter, Ed shared: “Never thought I’d have to explain it, but everything I do in my live show is live, it’s a loop station, not a backing track. Please Google.”

Keen to make it known that he wasn’t taking the negative comments to heart, Ed followed up with: “Anyway, great night, great atmosphere, family, friends, fun. Love you all.”

Ed has always used a foot pedal in his live performances.

Ed is famed for using a loop pedal during all of his live shows, with the singer using the pedal and his acoustic guitar to build a foundation of melodies and layered soundscapes.

A loop pedal records short bursts of Ed’s guitar and then plays the sound back in a repetitive loop, with Ed able to mix together more than one loop at a time to create the backing track live on stage so that he can sing and play along.

Praising Ed for speaking up, his fans responded to his tweet in abundance, with one writing: “How do people not know this you’ve been doing it since the start of your career?”

Others added: “You’re so good at the loop station that it looks and sounds effortless. We know it takes loads of talent and your live show is incredible.”

“Got huge respect for what you do on stage cause that’s pretty intense to use.”

“No need to explain yourself… We know you always play live and anyone watching or was there could see that.”

Despite the critics, Ed drew a huge crowd during his Glastonbury slot, performing some of his biggest hits including ‘Castle On The Hill’, ‘Don’t’ and ‘The A Team’.
