Ed Sheeran's cameo shocks Game of Thrones fans

WARNING: CONTAINS SEASON 7 SPOILERS

Game of Thrones season 7 finally landed last night and Ed Sheeran made a surprise appearance in its first episode with a lot of screen time and more than a few lines to go with it.

GoT fans were aware months ago that the Castle on the Hill hitmaker would have a small role in the seventh season of the HBO fantasy drama but it came sooner than many of us expected when his soldier alter ego crossed paths with Arya Stark – played by his pal Maisie Williams.

And Ed’s singing capabilities didn’t go to waste during his cameo – listed in the credits as “Man #1”.

Riding through the forest, Arya heard singing and came across a group of Lannister soldiers, asking them what the ‘pretty song’ was.

The camera then panned to Ed, who smiled and said, “a new one”.

The lyrics were: ‘He rode through the streets of the city / Down from his hill on high / O’er the winds and the steps and the cobbles / He rode to a woman’s sigh / For she was his secret treasure / She was his shame and his bliss / And a chain and a keep are nothing / Compared to a woman’s kiss / For hands of gold are always cold / But a woman’s hands are warm.’

Ed didn’t even have to wield his sword!

Arya then dined with the group and they swapped stories and fans would have been delighted to see the 26-year-old singer was given a good amount of screen-time.

And of course, they flocked to Twitter to share their shock about seeing him in the first episode.

Ed previously insisted “nothing exciting happens” during his brief appearance on the show, but reminded his fans to tune in, tweeting: “Sunday = cat picture. Also, watch Game of Thrones tonight x”

He also joined in the excitement last night on social media.

He previously admitted he was worried his cameo had been ‘built up too much.’

He added: ‘People will just be like, ‘Oh… oh, all right’. It’s not an integral part of it, at all. I’m just like, in it.’

It was revealed in March the ‘Photograph’ hitmaker would have an appearance on the show because Maisie is a big fan of the award-winning singer.

Showrunner David Benioff said: ‘For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it.’

Ed’s cameo follows Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Coldplay drummer Will Champion, Sigur Ros and Mastadon who have all made appearances in the past.
