Ed Sheeran may come off as a down-to-Earth dude who happens to create chart-topping music, but make no mistake: He's on a mission, and he's no longer keeping quiet about his bold ambitions.

In the latest issue of British GQ, Ed got real about his fierce competitive streak - and some fans aren't feeling it. Likening himself to Taylor Swift, Ed said, "She wants to be the biggest female artist in the world, and I want to be the biggest male artist in the world." Fair enough, but then he went on to say this:

"There are a lot of singer-songwriters around now," Ed mused. "I'm not the first, but there are more than before. I'm very happy for everyone to be in the same race as me, even if they copy every single thing I've done." Oooooh, burn.

"In a 100-meter sprint to get a No. 1 album. I just know I'm going to win," he continued. "I don't care who's doing what. I just know I'm going to win. I'm going to make sure I come first."

Fans who love Ed for his relatable music and humble persona were put off by his display of bravado. Under the hashtag #EdSheeranIsOver, they blasted him for being full of himself.

Others jumped to his defense, insisting it'S OK to be ambitious and proud of your work.

Ed responded to the controversy on Twitter, insisting that his words had been taken out of context. At the same time, though, he noted that he's not ashamed to be driven.

Look at the bright side, Ed. You haven't made it until you have an "IsOver" hashtag to your name. Now you're one step closer to world domination.
