Eddie Howe accepts some Newcastle United players could be saying 'goodbye' this summer

Eddie Howe admits that some of the Newcastle United squad may be saying "goodbye" after the club's final Premier League game of the season - but insists there are still contracts up for grabs this summer.

Howe will ponder the best scenarios for both Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett with the duo's current deals up next month but still offering competition for places at United. In what Howe anticipates as an "uncertain market" this summer, he is hoping to add quality to a squad that have proved capable of challenging for Europe.

When asked if every player in the current roster could get a deal, Howe told Chronicle Live: "That is still the case. Of course, as we move closer to the summer, some players may be saying goodbye. Again that is unclear as we sit here now."

Howe has used 34-year-old Ritchie 17 times this season while former Wales international Dummett has made seven appearances. Both are likely to get minutes on the post-season tour of Australia too.

Howe said: "Paul is still a hugely talented player. Paul has done well this season in the fact he has stayed fit and healthy for the majority of the season and he's trained very well.

"The game he played in the early season I thought he played very well for us. So yeah I think he has been excellent behind the scenes, he really has.

"Together with Matt Ritchie and other experienced players who have not played a lot they have contributed to the group massively."

Howe is not expecting to make mass changes to his squad but is interested to see what the PSR and FFP climate that dominated the January trading period has done for the summer window and whether there will be any potential knock-on effect.

Howe said: "I am not saying there will be (a major overhaul), there are just so many unknowns in the transfer market this summer. For all the Premier League teams it could be a window like no other because of January when there was minimal activity.

"What has that done to the value of players? That is what is slightly unsure.

"I don't anticipate there being a massive overhaul. Certainly, I don't think we want one because I think we have a really good squad.

"We want to pick some really good players to add to the group. But we don't know yet."
