Eddie Howe overlooked in Premier League manager of the year nominations as surprise choice sneaks in

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been overlooked in the Premier League's manager of the season nominations - despite steering the club through their worst injury crisis in modern times.

The Newcastle head coach was a surprise omission from the list submitted by Premier League officials on Thursday afternoon. Howe goes into the final three games of the campaign still in with a shout of a top five finish and Newcastle need just four points from the last nine available to clinch a slot in either the Europa League or Europa Conference League next season.

Howe, who also guided Newcastle to the quarter-finals of both domestic cup competitions and oversaw a 4-1 victory over Paris St-Germain in the Champions League, has battled on throughout a campaign in which the treatment room has been fit for bursting.

Not only has the manager been without Kieran Trippier for long periods he has watched on as Joe Willock, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Matt Targett were ruled out for the remainder of the campaign. Even youngsters such as Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley did not avoid the injury curse and Nick Pope has not played since December.

Regardless of those factors, and losing Sandro Tonali on a season long ban for betting, Howe has made ends meet on Tyneside. He was even denied spending extra funds in January due to PSR rules.

As expected the likes of Pep Guardiola, Mike Arteta, Jurgen Klopp and Unai Emery were named as candidates. But perhaps the surprise is that AFC Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola got the nod over Howe. The Cherries have finished the season strongly but spent most of the campaign in the bottom half.

A Premier League statement read: "Five of the Premier League's best managers of 2023/24 have been nominated for the Barclays Manager of the Season award, and you can help to decide who wins.

"You, the fans, have until 12:00 BST on Monday 13 May to choose your favourite from Mikel Arteta, Unai Emery, Pep Guardiola, Andoni Iraola and Jurgen Klopp.

"The votes from the public will be combined with those of a panel of football experts to decide the winner, who will be announced on Tuesday 21 May."
