Edgar Wright has confirmed that Netflix will be producing an anime based on his cult film, Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Despite being a box-office bomb, the 2010 film gained acclaim at the time of its release and subsequently garnered a cult following, with rumours of a spin-off or continuation being rife in the intervening years.

Announcing the project via his Twitter account, Wright expressed delight at rounding the original cast back up, with Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Chris Evans amongst the actors who will be reprising their original roles.

"This is not a drill! This is happening!" he began. "After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, I'm thrilled to say one is IMMINENT, with the whole cast back together and… you are going to lose your minds.

"One of the proudest, most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim," he continued. "Since the film's release in 2010 we've done Q&As and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the gang on an actual project. Until now…"

Wright will serve as an executive producer for the project, which appears to be tentatively titled Scott Pilgrim: The Anime. Bryan Lee O'Malley, the creator of the original graphic novel, will write the series alongside BenDavid Grabinski, with Science SARU handling the animation.

Whilst it is unknown if the series is a retelling or continuation, Wright did hint that there could be new developments in the plot, writing: "[O'Malley and Grabinski] have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim with the geniuses at @sciencesaru that doesn't just expand the universe, but also… well, just watch it."

Scott Pilgrim vs the World told the story of the titular character (Cera), who is tasked with battling the seven evil exes of his girlfriend, Ramona Flowers (Winstead).

Scott Pilgrim: The Anime currently has no release date.
