A Jet2 flight bound for Edinburgh was forced to abandon its landing and divert to Glasgow following reported an issue on the airport's runway.

Flight LS710 took off from Antalya, Turkey, on Thursday night and was due to land in the capital during the early hours. However, at around 2am, an issue on the airport's runway was reported.

The aircraft abandoned its landing and instead touched down in Glasgow a short while later, with passengers provided with transportation back to Edinburgh or reimbursed if they paid for their own, reports The Scottish Sun.

The airline also confirmed the diversion was 'out of their control' and apologised for the inconvenience. The flight's route on FlightRadar24 shows the aircraft attempting to approach Edinburgh before circling over the Scottish Borders.

The pilot then made two loops in the sky before changing course and heading towards Glasgow. It touched down at around 2.26am as passengers spoke of the "nightmare" which followed.

One flyer, from Glasgow, explained they had to pay for a taxi out of their own pocket to get to Edinburgh after parking at the airport. And because of the extra time added on by the diversion, they had to pay an overcharge fee to get their car before driving back to Glasgow again.

They said: "It was a nightmare getting home. We were meant to land at 2.20am in Edinburgh but the flight got diverted to Glasgow due to a problem on the runway.

"We then had to get a taxi - at our own expense - from Glasgow to Edinburgh to get our car. We then had to pay an overcharge fee at the car park and then drive back! What a nightmare".

A Jet2 spokesperson said: “Following a runway closure at Edinburgh Airport, flight LS710 diverted to Glasgow Airport last night. Customers received ground transportation back to Edinburgh Airport.

"We would like to apologise to all customers for any inconvenience caused, which was completely beyond our control." The Scottish Sun approached Edinburgh Airport for comment.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: "Arrivals and departures were suspended for a short time as teams carried out repairs to a small breakup, and we communicated this with our airline partners to ensure they were aware and could make alternative arrangements for passengers.

"The runway is approaching the end of its life with a full replacement operation planned for next year. We always prioritise safety and maintain a regular maintenance regime, and we will continue to complete works where and when required."
