Edinburgh drivers have been stuck in tailbacks on a major road during rush hour on Friday (June 21).

The Royal Highland Show has opened for its second day and traffic is already building on the M9, M8 and A8.

In images shared by Traffic Scotland, huge queues can be seen tailing back on the M9 near Newbridge citybound as ticket holders get ready for another day at the Royal Highland Show.

Drivers have been warned to leave plenty of time to travel as people have already complained of long waiting times. On Wednesday, as preparations for the show was preparing, people were stuck in queues for 50 minutes to get from Newbridge to Edinburgh Airport.

Meanwhile, others have said it took them 'two hours' to get home from Edinburgh Airport after being caught up in the queues.

Traffic Scotland posted on X: "Traffic is already building this morning Southbound on the #M9 slip at Newbridge with the #A8 also slowing on the approach to Ingliston. Do give yourself plenty of travel time this morning!"

On their website, they have said: "Doors open from 7am and the event finishes at 8pm each day, except Sunday, when it finishes at 6pm. Traffic in and around Ingliston will be busy. We expect heavy traffic, particularly on the A90, A720, M8 and M90 as well as local routes. Visit the Edinburgh Council website for details on road closures."

Edinburgh Airport issued a warning to those travelling to the airport and are encouraging customers to use the trams.

They said: "Roads near the airport will be busier than usual when thousands of people make their way to Ingliston for the Royal Highland Show between June 20 and June 24.

"We're encouraging passengers to leave extra time for their journeys as the Highland Show, combined with the busy summer holiday period at the airport, means there may be some queueing traffic on routes around the airport - particularly in the west of the city.

"It's also well worth considering public transport as an option to help cut journey times down, with fantastic tram and bus connections to and from the airport."
