An Edinburgh tennis star has booked his place in the second round at Wimbledon - setting up a showdown with all-time great Novak Djokovic.

Edinburgh-born Jacob Fearnley is keeping hope alive for Scottish tennis fans in the absence of Andy Murray - who withdrew from the singles tournament at Wimbledon on Tuesday due to injury.

Fearnley, 22, overcame Spanish qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas in straight sets to set up a second tie match against world number two Djokovic - who will have his eyes on a record-equalling 8th Wimbledon title.

Fearnley beat Canas on Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (14-12) victory which took two hours 47 minutes.

The 22-year-old also has history of playing with some of the game's greats having hit with Roger Federer at Wimbledon as a junior and beating Carlos Alcaraz and current world number one Jannik Sinner in the youth ranks.

Speaking ahead of what will be the biggest game of his career against Djokovic, Fearnley said: "I have watched him on TV countless times and what he's done for the sport is remarkable.

"It would be pretty daunting and amazing and weird to be across the net from him. He's definitely one of my idols. If I could reach half of his level I'd be very happy."

He added: "There were only three more names to be called before Djokovic! I've been thinking all week about what draw I'd like to have had, I don't have an answer.
