Edith Bowman says she was 'absolutely floored' when she was told about Radio 1 exit

Edith Bowman says she was "absolutely floored" when her show on BBC Radio 1 was cancelled and she was "edged out" of the station after years of service.

The 48-year-old DJ and TV presenter joined the broadcaster in 2003 and went on to host various programmes until her departure in 2014 when The Review Show was cancelled.

Bowman told Psychologies magazine — reported via the Mirror — that she was surprised when she heard that the axe was coming down on her show.

"Lies and deceit are extremely strong words, but the discussions I'd been having with my boss at the time about my future were very far from what I was being told in the meeting," she revealed.

Bowman said she "knew that I was being edged out by Radio 1" when she was moved to The Review Show, but had a "joyous experience" on that show and was surprised to see it go.

She added: "The conversation was the opposite of what I was expecting and it absolutely floored me.

"So I just felt incredibly let down because I'd given everything I had. At the time I was too speechless and upset about it."

A Radio 1 spokesman told the Mirror: "As we said at the time, Edith was one of a number of departures announced in June 2014 to enable Radio 1 & 1Xtra to deliver some of the savings they were being asked to make as part of the wider BBC’s financial challenges following the licence fee settlement."

Bowman first joined Radio 1 in 2003 to present Colin and Edith alongside Colin Murray before becoming sole presenter in the weekday afternoon slot from 2006.

She moved to the weekend breakfast show in 2009 before taking over The Review Show from Nihal in 2012.

She has continued to present BBC programmes since leaving Radio 1, including joining Dermot O'Leary to host the virtual Bafta Film Awards in 2011.

Bowman also hosts the movie music podcast Soundtracking and has fronted the filmmaker interview programme Life Cinematic for BBC Four.
